SYRIA: FOREIGN RELATIONS

25th January 2018

Sir Nicholas Soames: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what the aims and objectives are of Her Majesty's Government's policy on Syria.

Alistair Burt, Minister of State for the Middle East at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office: The UK’s goals in Syria are defeating Daesh, and achieving a political settlement that ends the war and suffering, provides stability for all Syrians and the wider region, and enables refugees to safely return. To do this, there needs to be a transition to a new, inclusive, non-sectarian government that can protect the rights of all Syrians and unite the country. We support the UN-led Geneva process between the Syrian parties as this is the forum for reaching a lasting solution to the conflict. We also aim to alleviate suffering through our humanitarian response to the crisis, to which we have committed £2.46 billion.
